Russia Accuses US of Causing Ukraine’s Crises

Russian officials are now starting to place the blame of the East Ukraine conflict and other international security crises on the United States. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu is claiming that the United States is trying to bring Kiev closer to the West and that is why Moscow had to use force. Shoigu said to an annual security conference in Moscow, “The United States and its allies have crossed all possible lines in their drive to bring Kiev into their orbit. That could not have failed to trigger our reaction.”

General Valery Gerasimov had something similar to say at the same meeting: “Considering themselves the winners of the Cold War, the United States decided to reshape the world to fit its needs. Aiming at complete dominance, Washington stopped taking into account the interests of other countries and respect international law.”  Russia and America’s relationship has never been the best, especially since World War II and then the beginning of the Cold War. However, with all this blame it could be a tactic for Russia to bring the attention on America instead of themselves.

Back in March, Russia annexed Crimea and then protests started taking place in the streets. According to Reuters, “Separatist unrest then spread to eastern, Russian-speaking regions of Ukraine where fighting between Kiev’s troops and pro-Russian rebels has killed more than 6,000 people. The West says Moscow drives the rebellion.”

Putin has repeated the denials that they were not giving support to the rebels in East Ukraine, even though it is likely that they are since the rebels are pro-Russian. If Russia isn’t helping the rebels against the Kiev troops, then who is? Russia already annexed Crimea; what is to stop them from getting their hands on Ukraine as well. Russia already has supporters in Ukraine, so there really isn’t much to stop them. However, if they do use military force, and are seen taking over another country, that may constitute other countries getting involved.
