Russia hacking Western crucial infrastructure, UK claims.

The UK’s cyber security agency issued a warning about hackers sympathetic to Russia and its conflict in Ukraine constituting a rising threat to Western critical national infrastructure.

Russia-backed “hacktivists” have carried out seemingly innocuous online assaults, defacing or shutting down high-profile public websites. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a component of Britain’s GCHQ eavesdropping intelligence agency, warned that some of these groups were seeking to enhance the amount of damage they do in the real world.

According to the NCSC, “some have stated a desire to achieve a more disruptive and destructive impact against western critical national infrastructure, including in the UK.”

During a two-day conference in Belfast, the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) issued the alert to the media.

Despite being ideologically oriented and aligned with Russian state interests, these groups are “not subject to formal state control,” according to the notification.

It was said that “this makes them less predictable.”

The consequences of a successful cyberattack on critical national infrastructure, such as the electricity grid or water supply, might be disastrous.

The NCSC, however, warned that these attacks “may become more effective over time,” despite the fact that they are “unlikely” to be carried out by hacktivist groups “without external assistance.”

It’s conceivable, though, that such assistance already exists.

A “Top Secret” document was among hundreds of leaked top-secret US intelligence papers warning that a pro-Russia hacking group known as “Zarya” had hacked networks within Canada’s gas infrastructure.

The letter was reviewed, in which the group claimed to have bragged of being able to “increase valve pressure, disable alarms, and initiate an emergency shutdown of an unspecified gas distribution station” using screenshots.
