Russia says it thwarts Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow

Russia’s defence ministry announced that two drones launched from Ukraine attacked Moscow early on Monday, but were successfully intercepted and destroyed. Fragments of the drones were discovered 2 kilometers away from the ministry’s buildings, according to state news agencies.

The defence ministry referred to the incident as a “terrorist attack” and confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from the attack. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also provided information on the attack, stating that two non-residential buildings were struck around 4 a.m. It remains unclear whether the drones hit the buildings during their interception or if they were intentionally targeted.

The exact location of where the drones were intercepted was not disclosed by either the defence ministry or the mayor. However, emergency services reported that drone fragments were found near a building on Komsomolsky Avenue, which is in close proximity to the defence ministry’s buildings.

Russian news agencies reported that as a result of the attack, traffic was closed on Komsomolsky Avenue and Likhachev Avenue in Moscow’s south. A high-rise office building on Likhachev Avenue was also damaged.

A video released by Russia’s defence ministry television channel Zvezda showed a high-rise building with missing windows on the top floors and structural damage. Additionally, other Russian Telegram channels associated with Russia’s security forces shared videos depicting glass and concrete debris on what they claimed to be Komsomolsky Avenue.

There has been no immediate response from Kyiv regarding the incident. It is worth noting that Ukraine rarely takes public responsibility for attacks inside Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine. However, in recent months, they have expressed that targeting Russia’s military infrastructure supports their counteroffensive efforts.
