Russia’s Prigozhin remains under investigation for mutiny

According to unidentified sources cited by Kommersant newspaper and Russia’s three main news agencies on Monday, a criminal case against Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of mercenaries, for mutiny is still being investigated and remains open. President Vladimir Putin vowed to crush the mutiny after Prigozhin claimed that his Wagner Group fighters had taken control of Rostov and were heading to Moscow on a “march for justice” to remove corrupt and incompetent Russian commanders. The Kremlin defused the crisis by mediating a deal with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, dropping the criminal case against Prigozhin and allowing him to move to Belarus. However, Kommersant newspaper and Russia’s three main news agencies reported that the criminal case against Prigozhin remained open and that the Federal Security Service (FSB) was continuing its investigation. TASS cited a source close to the prosecutor’s office as saying that “the criminal case against Prigozhin has not stopped” and “the investigation is ongoing.” Prigozhin, who has not been seen in public since leaving Rostov, denied leading a mutiny. He launched his rebellion after alleging that the Russian military had killed some of his men in an air strike, which the Defence Ministry denied. The prison term under Russian law for such a crime is 12-20 years.
