Russia’s top general Gerasimov shown in a video for first time since failed June 24 mutiny

Russia’s top general, Valery Gerasimov, made his first public appearance since the failed June 24 mercenary mutiny. In a video released on Monday, Gerasimov was shown ordering subordinates to destroy Ukrainian missile sites. He was seen sitting in a military command room, chairing a meeting with top generals, some of whom were present via video call. Gerasimov also gave orders to Russia’s military intelligence service (GRU).

During the meeting, Gerasimov was informed that a Ukrainian missile attack on Crimea and the Rostov and Kaluga regions had been thwarted. The video footage showed Gerasimov discussing how Russia should respond to the attack. The defence ministry confirmed that the footage was from a meeting on Sunday and described Gerasimov as the chief of the general staff of Russia’s armed forces and the commander of Moscow’s forces in Ukraine.

The video also revealed that President Vladimir Putin has retained his two most powerful military figures, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Gerasimov, despite demands from mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin to dismiss them. Prigozhin’s mutiny on June 24 was aimed at settling scores with Shoigu and Gerasimov, whom he accused of incompetence and treason. Prigozhin believed that they had involved the Kremlin chief in a failing war that exposed corruption and decay within Russia’s military.

In the video, Gerasimov was shown listening to a report by General Sergei Surovikin’s deputy, Viktor Afzalov, from the aerospace forces. Surovikin, who was repeatedly praised by Prigozhin, has not been seen in public since the mutiny. His whereabouts remain unknown. Surovikin, also known as “General Armageddon,” is formally the commander in chief of the aerospace forces.

Gerasimov expressed satisfaction with the performance of the aerospace forces, stating, “We note that the aerospace forces have coped with the task.” He then requested the aerospace forces and GRU military intelligence to identify the storage sites and launch positions of enemy missiles and other strike weapons for planning a preemptive strike.

The video released by the defence ministry blurred out the participants of the video call, except for Surovikin’s deputy, Afzalov. It remains unclear where Surovikin is.

In conclusion, the article highlights the public appearance of Russia’s top general, Valery Gerasimov, after the failed mercenary mutiny. The video footage shows Gerasimov giving orders to destroy Ukrainian missile sites and discussing Russia’s response to a thwarted missile attack. It also emphasizes President Putin’s decision to retain Gerasimov and Defence Minister Shoigu despite demands for their dismissal. The article mentions the absence of General Surovikin, known as “General Armageddon,” and his deputy’s report during the meeting. The whereabouts of Surovikin remain unknown.
