For a while now people have been speculating about what the Jets offer to Ryan Fitzpatrick could be. We started to hear what some of it was a few days ago. It was reported that it was a three year deal with the first year being worth 12 million. Well, now we know exactly what it is. Charles Robinson of rushhourdaily.com Sports was the first to report it, the offer from the Jets to Fitzpatrick is for three years and 24 million. It breaks down to 12 millions in the first year and then six million in years two and three.
So they clearly front loaded the contract, and that was done on purpose. If Fitzpatrick is back with the Jets this year he will be the starter. But the same can’t be said for years two and three. The Jets drafted Christian Hackenberg in the second round of this years NFL Draft and they view him as the future at the quarterback position. And what if he just happens to be ready after just one year. Then the money Fitzpatrick is making in year two will be as a backup. Even if Fitzpatrick also starts in year two, there isn’t much of a chance he is starting in year three of the deal. By then, it will almost definitely be Hackenberg who is the Jets starting quarterback.
At some point, somebody is going to end up cracking. Whether it be the Jets or Ryan Fitzpatrick. Odds are that it will be Fitzpatrick. The Jets have kept this offer since March and with nobody else wanting Fitzpatrick, they have no reason to raise it. At this point, its looking like it will be the Jets or retirement for Fitzpatrick. Maybe a training camp injury happens and another team becomes interested in Fitzpatrick, but the odds are that team still wouldn’t offer more then the Jets. This has been going on for over two months now, and it will likely continue for about two more months.
