Saint-Maximin leaves Newcastle to join Saudi side Al-Ahli

French winger Allan Saint-Maximin has completed a three-year deal with Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli, leaving Newcastle United, according to announcements from both clubs on Sunday. Al-Ahli expressed their satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We pick the best, and he’s one of them,” on the messaging platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The transfer fee for the 26-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Ligue 1 side Nice in 2019, was not disclosed by either club. Saint-Maximin will join former Premier League players Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy, and Riyad Mahrez at Al-Ahli.

Newcastle’s decision to sell Saint-Maximin during this transfer window was influenced by UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Regulations, as manager Eddie Howe explained. Consequently, the winger was excluded from the team’s pre-season tour of the United States. It is worth noting that both Al-Ahli and Newcastle are partially owned by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, with ownership stakes of 75% and 80% respectively.

Saint-Maximin’s move to Al-Ahli adds him to the list of high-profile players who have made the transition to the Middle East. This includes Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Ruben Neves, who have followed in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in January. The article was reported by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Bengaluru and Tommy Lund in Gdansk, with editing by Clare Fallon and Ed Osmond.
