Samsung announced the release of two new phablets, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge, at this year’s IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany. Samsung also announced its release of a virtual reality headset designed exclusively for the Note 4.
The Note 4 features a curved design with a separate touch screen at the side of the phone. Samsung has also added PC-like abilities to the new Note 4. Users can resize windows, and the Note’s stylus can be used to click and highlight between windows.
The Galaxy Note Edge, a completely different version of the Note, features a right edge that continues the touchscreen back to the battery cover and functions as a dock for favorite apps.
The new headset, called the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition, immerses users with built-in speakers and a screen that wraps around users’ eyes. The VR shares similarities with the Oculus Rift, a headset that plugs into laptops and desktops. In a New York Times interview, Samsung said that they have a “deep partnership” with Oculus.
Reportedly, the VR Headset will be available for purchase this year. Its initial rollout may be minimal, since it functions only with the Galaxy Note 4 and not with the Galaxy Note Edge, limiting its potential market size. The Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge will be available in the U.S. this fall.
