Samsung Takes Hit After Note7 Discontinuation

Samsung will likely face a rocky road in repairing its relationship with customers after the recent Note7 discontinuation. Issues with the product were reported shortly after its initial launch in August. Samsung issued a recall, citing issues related to batteries overheating. The company offered to replace the devices in question but the problem still continued. Earlier this week, Samsung announced it would be permanently discontinuing production of the Note7.

In an effort to retain some of its customers, the company has offered a $100 bill credit towards a different Samsung product for those who bought the original Note7 or one of the replacements. A statement posted on their website on Thursday reads:

“We are putting in place a process to facilitate the exchange and refund of devices and will inform the Galaxy Note7 owners of next steps at the earliest. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause for customers and partners who have trusted and waited for the Galaxy Note7.”

Samsung has long since been one of the front-runners in the world of Smartphones and other electronics. There are now many questions about how it will able to recover from this blow. The company has admitted that there will be a significant impact on their operating profits.

Samsung is estimating that the discontinuation alone will cost about $3 billion over the next two fiscal quarters. The press release with this information also stated that the company “will focus on enhancing product safety for consumers by making significant changes in its quality assurance processes.”

There was no mention of what changes are going to take place in the quality assurance processes. At this time, there is still not a clear answer as to what caused the device issues.
