Scream therapy pays dividends for Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka, playing poorly and a set down in her Wimbledon second-round match against Varvara Gracheva, let out a scream of frustration after sending a forehand wide. This release, which could be heard throughout the All England Club, allowed the second seed to regain focus and ultimately secure a 2-6 7-5 6-2 victory on Friday.

During a press conference, the 25-year-old Belarusian admitted to feeling a bit crazy in that moment. Unable to throw her racket on the grass, she felt the need to scream and let out her frustration. Surprisingly, this outburst provided some relief and helped her think more clearly.

Sabalenka, considered one of the favorites to win the title, had reached the semi-finals in 2021 but was unable to participate last year due to the ban on players from Russia and Belarus. Before the tournament, she expressed anxiety about the crowd’s reaction, as she had experienced a mixed response during her run to the French Open semi-finals last month.

However, her concerns were unfounded at Wimbledon, where she appreciated the support of the British crowd. As she aims to secure her second Grand Slam crown after winning this year’s Australian Open, Sabalenka emphasized the importance of feeling the support during matches.

After her first match, she felt amazing and was incredibly grateful for all the support she received. The atmosphere and feeling of playing at Wimbledon were truly remarkable.
