Sears is deep in a financial crisis, thus explaining its reason for shutting down all the stores it has this past year and the ones it plans to shut down in the near future. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune last month, CEO Edward Lampert “acknowledged Sears’ struggles and admitted that the turnaround was taking longer than expected”, but still, he is committed to reversing the department store’s existing battle by turning the company into a “21st-centurt merchant”, the Tribune reported.

“Preparing the company for this day and age is something we’ve been working on for the last dozen years,” Lampert said. “The challenge for us internally as well as externally is to be able to demonstrate to the world that what we’ve built is something that can stand up against the best competition that’s out there.”

The closing stores are being turned over to Seritage Growth Properties, whose chairman just als0 happens to be Eddie Lampert, CEO of Sears. Seritage then rents out these spaces to businesses like Shake Shack, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Whole Foods and Pottery Barn.

Another step the company has taken in midst of its financial crisis is the selling of its Craftman tool brand to Stanley Black & Decker. The transition, which happened in early January, cost roughly $900 million. However, Sears is currently in a lawsuit with one of its Craftsman hand tools suppliers– the second one in less than a month with the supplier.

Turns out Sear’s is not the only retail company closing stores. Popular brands like Guess, Abercombie & Fitch, Macy’s, CVS, Staples, American Apparel, Michael Kors, JCPenny, Gamestop, Crocs, Wet Seal, Bebe, hhgregg, Family Christian, The Limited, Rue21, Payless, RadioShack, Gander Mountain, EMS, and Bob’s Stores have stores lined up to close as well.
