Senior Russian general knew about Prigozhin’s plans

According to the New York Times, General Sergey Surovikin, the deputy commander of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, had prior knowledge of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s plan to rebel against Moscow’s defense officials. U.S. officials, who were briefed on U.S. intelligence, are investigating whether Gen. Sergey Surovikin, the former top Russian commander in Ukraine, played a role in planning Mr. Prigozhin’s actions. Prigozhin fled to Belarus under a deal that ended a brief mutiny by his Wagner fighters, while President Vladimir Putin commended the armed forces for preventing a civil war. American officials also suspect that other Russian generals may have supported Prigozhin, although RushHourDaily could not independently verify this information. The Pentagon, Kremlin, and Russian defense ministry did not respond to RushHourDaily’ requests for comments. In October, Surovikin was appointed as the overall commander of Ukraine operations, but in January, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov took over the campaign, with Surovikin remaining as his deputy. Prior to the mutiny, Prigozhin criticized both Shoigu and Gerasimov for the campaign’s failures and the lack of support for Wagner fighters. Surovikin urged the Wagner group to cease their opposition to the military leadership and return to their bases, just before Prigozhin led his fighters on a “march for justice” that was ultimately aborted near Moscow.
