A Lufthansa flight from Texas to Germany encountered “extreme turbulence” and was forced to make an emergency landing D.C. Seven passengers have been taken to the hospital.

According to a representative for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Lufthansa Flight 469 was forced to make an emergency landing at Dulles International Airport in Virginia when it encountered turbulence while en route from Austin to Frankfurt.

At around 9:12 pm, the agency sent news that the airplane landed successfully at the airport.

According to the officials, seven people were sent to several nearby hospitals. The state of their injury has not been released.

The Federal Aviation Administration has said that the crew reported encountering severe turbulence at a height of about 37,000 feet. The aircraft was traveling over the state of Tennessee at this time. The FAA is investigating the situation at this time.

The National Weather Service describes turbulence as “irregular motion of the air owing to eddies and vertical currents,” which may result in injuries to passengers and unplanned landings. Turbulence can also lead aircraft to deviate from their normal flight paths.

In December last year, a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu experienced turbulence, which resulted in 25 injuries. In June, an airplane that was traveling from Florida to Tennessee was forced to make an emergency landing in Alabama, which resulted in eight passengers sustaining injuries.
