Several missing after fire at Pemex offshore platform, Mexico’s president says

Several workers at an offshore platform operated by Mexican state oil company Pemex in the Gulf of Mexico are missing following a fire that occurred early Friday morning, according to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The president stated that Pemex firefighters were present at the Cantarell complex in the Bay of Campeche to extinguish the fire after an explosion on a gas production platform, and that employees were evacuated. Lopez Obrador mentioned that there are three or four individuals who are currently missing. The oil workers union reported that one Pemex employee and three others were injured. Although the fire took place at Pemex’s Nohoch-A offshore gas compression platform, oil production has not been affected, as confirmed by a source at the company. The injuries sustained were minor, according to the same source. Cantarell, which is one of Mexico’s largest oil fields and was once a prized asset for Pemex, currently produces 170,000 barrels per day (bpd) based on Pemex data.
