“Sherlock” Special Finally Gets Premiere Date

Since the last episode of the third season was released last year, fans of BBC’s Sherlock have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new season.

The hit mystery series, a modern adaptation of the classic book series of the same name, has slowly won critics and audiences since its debut in 2010. At the time, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the titular character, was only somewhat known in the U.K. and was virtually unknown in America. Martin Freeman, who helms the role of Dr. Watson, was best known at the time for his roles in The Office (Original UK version) and Love Actually. The two actors have both gone on to tremendous fame, Cumberbatch landing roles in a variety of American films including Star Trek Into Darkness and most recently the Johnny Depp drama Black Mass. Freeman starred as Bilbo Baggins in the three-part adaptation of The Hobbit, as well as a starring role in the first season of Fargo.

Each season of the series, co-created by Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss, is made up of three 90 minute episodes. The new special, debuting January 1, is interesting in that it a period piece. Instead of taking place in modern day London, as the rest of the show does, the special will return to the 19th Century, the time the book series took place. Now that the series has been on for half a decade, the change of scenery should do the show some good, though it arguably has never had a bad season.

The trailer for the special was released on Youtube over the weekend, but it doesn’t reveal too much except for the presence of an “abominable bride.”

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride premieres Friday, January 1, at 9 p.m. eastern on PBS.
