Silicon Valley Shifts Focus Towards Robotics and AI

For years the technology hub known as Silicon Valley has focused most of its efforts in developing social media, apps, and other software. However, industry insiders and tech fanatics alike are now noticing a distinct shift in development focus within the valley towards artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

The robotics and AI industry is nothing new to the area. For years there have been small startups and companies acquiring moderate investments to make advancements in their research and development. Recently there has been what can only be described as a boom in these specific fields. Numerous companies have come out of the woodwork and are acquiring fairly sizable due to a new found interest in the technology.

Many speculate that the interest is due to the tech industry hitting a “wall” in development. That there is nothing more that can be done with current technology and that we must venture to the next technological platforms which are robotics and AI. Others argue this has been in the workings for a long time now, that technology is just following its natural evolution and investors are just now taking notice in what the next link of the evolutionary chain.

AI has gradually been working its way into our everyday lives. Making its first major appearance in our phones under the names of Siri (Apple) and Cortana (Microsoft). Now it can be found in our homes through Amazon’s Echo and the Google Home. There are even AI that goes relatively unnoticed such as the systems that will soon send cars into full autonomy.

The New York Times reports that funding within the industry has increased dramatically over the years.

“Funding in A.I. start-ups has increased more than fourfold to $681 million in 2015, from $145 million in 2011, according to the market research firm CB Insights. The firm estimates that new investments will reach $1.2 billion this year, up 76 percent from last year.”

With the explosion in funding of these two technologies, we can expect to see our everyday technology become drastically altered in the near future. Our devices will be more intelligent, learn, and adapt all on their own.

About Milton Harris

My name is Milton Anthony Harris II. I’m one of the biggest tech nerds and car freaks on the planet. Naturally this makes me a huge gaming enthusiast, and an F1 fan, but you'll likely find me in front of the nearest big screen during Hockey season cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes. Outside of that, I'm a sarcastic beer snob that loves to have a good time and ogle over the engine bay of a beautiful car/truck or the insides of a liquid cooled gaming computer.
