Spanish Socialists lose seat, after expat vote count, making it harder to form government

Spain’s Socialists have lost one seat after counting votes from abroad in last week’s election, making it more difficult for them to form a left-wing coalition without the support of hardline Catalan separatists, according to analysts. Neither the left nor right blocs won enough seats to form a majority, with Catalan separatist parties Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and Junts emerging as kingmakers. While Esquerra is likely to support Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Junts, the more hardline party, would also need to actively support him for a government to be formed. Sanchez called the election early after left-wing parties performed poorly in local and regional elections in May, but he now faces challenges in forming a government. The revised seat count shows that the People’s Party (PP) could gather a total of 171 votes, while Sanchez could muster 171 seats with the support of various parties. Previously, the left bloc had 172 votes, but now Sanchez may need at least one vote from Junts to beat the PP and its allies. Junts has set conditions for supporting Sanchez, including permission to hold a referendum on independence for Catalonia and amnesty for separatists facing legal charges. The PP leader, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, still aims to form a right-wing coalition. Sumar leader Yolanda Díaz has called on all “progressive forces” to support Sanchez.
