Comic book fans are raving about Sony’s decision to merge the character of Spider-Man with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The talks about the merger was originally rumored to be taking place back in December when the Sony hack revealed confidential emails that expressed interest in trying to iron out details about Spider-Man joining the rest of the characters on the big screen.
While it’s still unknown when Spider-Man will make his grand appearance, or who will portray the character, Marvel.com released these facts about the web slingers plans, “Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.”
The fact of the matter is Spider-Man is a staple character in the Marvel Universe, one whose lack of presence from the current films is easily recognizable to those who have read the comics, but as the future of the franchises unfolds, Marvel and Sony were able to bury the hatchet and are trying to play catch up so they could use the character more often.
Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, gave this statement about the merger, “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”
The announcement also pushed back the dates of the future Thor and Black Panther films, which could possibly hint at the fact that Spider-Man will have a role in those two storylines. While many are speculating that Peter Parker, a.k.a., Spider-Man, will first appear in the upcoming film, “Captain America: Civil War.”
