Spotify opens its podcast catalog to third party apps

The company plans to launch this API on a larger scale, and the launch of this new API will increase the user base of the company.

Spotify has decided to open its podcast catalog to third-party apps. This week, the company introduced a new version of its Podcast APIs that allows third-party apps to connect to Spotify. The third-party apps can access the podcast library, and get information about episodes and podcast shows.

This launch is quite crucial because it will help Spotify increase its user base. Moreover, it gives access to Spotify’s exclusive shows.

Like other streaming providers, Spotify has begun to use the term “podcast” loosely. It means an audio program in an episodic format. However, initially, it referred to audio episodes available on the web.

Spotify has introduced membership or paid subscriptions. It obtained technology startups to help people manage their podcasts. This also included several other podcast networks, like Parcast and The Ringer Gimlet, which introduced the industry’s top shows. The investment in the streaming side of the business boosted the podcast listening by 200% in the previous year. This has also introduced the ways for the company to get additional revenue through ads. Moreover, the company has become a platform for a Podcast Ad network.

Spotify Library

Today, around 700,000 of Spotify’s podcasts are exclusive to itself. This simply means that if you want to listen to them, you need to join Spotify. However, it also means that you need to use the Spotify app for streaming shows, instead of using third-party apps, such as Pocket Casts, Castro, Overcast, and several others.

Spotify’s new API mainly focuses on managing shows and podcast discovery. Moreover, the company believes that the new features will be quite useful for apps that import shows to social podcasting and Spotify’s library.

The company’s spokesperson said in a statement, “Introducing this podcast API has been quite helpful for Spotify. We are quite excited to unleash the creative power of the developer community.”

Before introducing the new Podcast API, Spotify worked alongside several partners who were building external integration to gain feedback. The company states that it will keep on working on the project in the coming months. Moreover, it plans to take this API to the next level. The company also plans to highlight new apps on its developer website.
