Comedian and television host Stephen Colbert will be expanding to a new type of political comedy– one involving animation and Donald Trump.
Last Thursday, Showtime announced it had ordered 10 episodes of an untitled 30 minute animated series that will focus on President Trump and also his family members, featuring “truish adventures of Trump’s confidants and bon vivants – family, top associates, heads of government, golf pros and anyone else straying into his orbit”, while “intrepidly exploring their histories and their psyches, revealing insights into what makes them so definitively Trumpian.”
Colbert will be an executive producer and his showrunner, Chris Licht, will be following, the New York Times reported. Colbert is the host of his show called The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“I know a lot of people wanted to do this, and I’m honored that the Cartoon President invited our documentary crew into his private world,” Colbert said in a statement. “I’ve seen some of the footage, and I look forward to sharing the man behind the MAGA,” referring to Mr. Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
Colbert’s late-night show has featured an animated version of the president on several occasions. Tim Luecke, one of the creators, will be the lead animator of the series, according to the Times.
“Stephen and Chris have an uncanny genius for deconstructing the world of President Trump, and this series opens a new realm for them,” David Nevins, president, and CEO of Showtime Networks, said in a statement. “Their vision will produce a comedy that makes waves, gets attention and plays great on our networks, including our streaming service.”
Colbert is among other entertainers who have turned the White happenings into comedy. Others include Anthony Atamanuik, who plays Trump on Comedy Central’s “The President Show.” On Saturday Night Live, Alec Balwin regularly impersonates Trump alongside other cast members who portray members of Trump’s inner circle.
The new Showtime series is set to premiere this fall.
