Storm Lee makes landfall in Canada, downing trees and knocking out power

Lee, a post-tropical cyclone, made landfall in western Nova Scotia, Canada, causing widespread damage and power outages along the North Atlantic coast. One storm-related fatality was reported in Maine when a tree fell on a motorist’s vehicle. The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that Lee, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, was moving north after hitting Long Island. It is expected to weaken over the next few days. The storm brought strong winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rains to coastal Maine and Atlantic Canada. In Nova Scotia, around 120,000 people were without power, and in New Brunswick, nearly 20,000 people experienced power outages. The Nova Scotia electric utility warned that it wasn’t safe for crews to restore power in high winds. Wind speeds exceeded 100 km/h in some areas, leading to flight cancellations at Halifax airport. In Maine, nearly 70,000 customers were without power. Fierce waves caused flooding and debris on Nova Scotia’s shoreline. The storm is expected to bring additional rainfall and increase the risk of flooding in eastern Maine and New Brunswick. The Canadian Hurricane Centre issued a statement warning of continued impacts from Lee. The U.S. administration declared an emergency for Maine and Massachusetts, providing federal assistance. Lee, which had been a large hurricane over the Atlantic, is the second powerful storm to reach Canada in consecutive years.
