A white Toyota Corolla with bombs attached killed three people and injured 22 in Kabul, Afghanistan. A Taliban suicide bomber drove to the airport around nine on Sunday morning, which is the busiest time. Two women and a British security contractor were killed by the bomb while 22 were injured, eight were women and three were children. Phillip Hammond, the foreign secretary, released a statement,
“I can confirm that a British security contractor is among those killed in the attack. His family has been informed and my thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.”
Along with the injured and casualties nearby shops, homes and roads were damaged in the blast. Also, there were charred vehicles as well. The Taliban have taken responsibility for the attack online, and The Guardian has received word from a spokesperson from the Taliban as well. It appears that the target of the attacks were civillians. Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the interior ministry, has said that
“Their target has always been civilians … They use civilians as shields. The target of this spring offensive, we don’t see a difference.”
This attack is because of the Taliban’s spring offensive. This is when they up the violence in their attacks and focus more on foreigners, but so far, the attacks have been on civilians. On Wednesday a gunman killed five Afghans and nine foreigners. Also, early Sunday morning, according to USA Today,
“a magnetic bomb attached to a vehicle exploded in the eastern suburbs of Kabul, wounding one person, Sediqqi said. And late Saturday, an explosion inside the campus of Kabul University wounded two people, he said.”
