Sweden is considering making Koran burnings illegal, Aftonbladet reports

The Swedish government is considering the possibility of making the act of burning the Koran or other holy books illegal. Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer informed Aftonbladet paper on Thursday that recent Koran burnings have posed a threat to Sweden’s security.

Last week, an Iraqi immigrant in Sweden burned the Koran outside a mosque in Stockholm. This action sparked outrage in the Muslim world and drew condemnation from the Pope. The Swedish Security services stated that such acts have made the country less safe.

Earlier this year, the police rejected several applications for protests that involved burning the Koran due to security concerns. However, the courts have since overturned these decisions, asserting that such acts are protected by Sweden’s extensive freedom of speech laws.

The Minister of Justice in Sweden announced on Thursday that the government is currently evaluating the situation and considering whether changes to the law are necessary.

“We need to question whether the current regulations are effective or if there is a need for reconsideration,” Strommer stated in an interview with Aftonbladet.

He further emphasized that Sweden has become a “prioritized target” for attacks, and the recent Koran burning has resulted in threats to the country’s internal security.

Additionally, the incident has had negative implications for Sweden’s bid to join NATO. Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan declared that his country cannot approve Sweden’s application until Koran burnings are halted.
