A Donation from China of 150,000 doses of its Sinopharm COVID-19  vaccine came to Syria on Saturday, with another lot of the same size planned to arrive any time soon, Syrian officials said.

“We appreciate this help that will allow the Ministry of Health to combat the pandemic, to stop its impact on the health system, society, and the economy,” the Minister of Health, Hassan Ghabash, told reporters. He said that the shots would first go to health workers and then to the elderly and people with chronic diseases.

Chinese ambassador in Syria said that the next 150,000 doses would arrive soon. Officials have said that the country is also discussing vaccines with Russia, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s, Kremlin’s key ally. Still, no announcement has been made about the shots from Moscow.

Damascus obtained its first COVID-19 vaccine delivery of the Global Covax Initiative, with almost 200,000 Astrazeneca shots, the official said. More deliveries are expected in the coming weeks. The World Health Organization has implemented teams throughout Syria for a vaccination program that will be implemented in the Government’s territory and some parts of the country outside state control after ten years of war.

In some countries, especially in Asia, the confirmed coronavirus cases continue to surge because of the new variants that continue to emerge. Only recently, in March, the officials detected a highly fatal Indian variant of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, for the third continuous day, the Asian country has been recording a record surge in cases, with total infections hitting a whopping 16 million mark.

Iran, whose total confirmed infections have surged to 2 million, announced the closure of flights from India and Pakistan. This comes as the country enters its second week of strict lockdown.
