Many are furious that a convicted rapist has continuously collected pension payments from an account that he said up before he was fired from his previous employer.
What causes many people to be so enraged is that the former convict, Laurence Hill, was convicted over five years ago for the raping of an eleven year old boy and a ten year old by. Hill was formerly a teacher at a local school, and even though he was fired, he still collects his pension payments as scheduled, and has never missed gaining one.
Even though Hill was incarcerated for five years for his crimes, and even though the Seattle School District paid the victims 3 million dollars because of the incidents, Hill has gained over 200,000 dollars from taxpayer money.
Many people feel that he should not be receiving his pension payments because of his crimes, and because he took advantage of being a teacher and mentor as an opportunity to sexually abuse these young boys.
Washington State Sen. Barbara Bailey is currently working on a new bill that would take away convicted felons rights to such benefits because they have violated public trust. He states, “For them to now be in prison, a felony charge against them, and still be eligible to collect a state pension that the taxpayers also pay into, is not satisfactory.”
Anne Marie Gurney, of the Freedom Foundation, also believes that Hill does not deserve his pension claiming, “A pension, in a lot of ways, is regarded as a reward for a job well done. I think we would all agree that raping children is not a job well done.”
While many people appear to be upset with the decision to continue to pay Hill’s pension, Hill is simply taking advantage of the fact that the law allows him to get paid despite his conviction and jail time. For a child rapist who was once a teacher, many would assume that the phone is not ringing with job offers, but it seems that until the law is change Hill will not need to worry about such financial issues.
