Thailand shooting: Security forces shoot gunman dead

  • According to the Thai police, Security forces have shot dead a soldier who went on a gun rampage.
  • The soldier, Jakraphanth Thomma killed his commanding officer on Saturday.

According to Thai police, Security forces have shot dead a soldier who went on a gun rampage. The rampage caused the death of 26 people in the Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima.

The soldier, Jakraphanth Thomma, killed his commanding officer on Saturday. He then proceeded to steal some weapons from the military camp.
According to reports, the incident of the gunman began on Saturday at approximately 15:30 local time (8:30 GMT) in the Suatham Phithak military camp.

He killed his commanding officer, Col Anantharot Krasae. 
Later he then continued his attack on the streets, which led him to the center of the city. He went into a shopping center located in the city’s center known as Korat.

According to reports, the gunman posted on social media while on the rampage. However, security forces cornered him at night in a building and shot him dead.
The prime minister of Thailand, Prayuth Chan-Ocha, announced an increase in the death toll. It saw an increase from the initial number of 20.

Fifty-seven people are injured as a result of the attack.
While visiting the wounded, the prime minister said that “It is unprecedented in Thailand, and I want this to be the last time this crisis happens.” He went further to describe the motive for the attack of the gunman.

He said that it was due to the belief of the gunman that he cheated in a property deal.
The security forces received praises for their success in gunning down the soldier, by the Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul through a Facebook post.

What happened at the shopping center?
At around 3 am local time, there was gunfire. Security forces exchanged fire with the gunman while trying to dislodge the gunman.

Many people were let out of the shopping center, although people were concerned that many persons were hostage to the gunman.

They shot the gunman Sunday at 09: 30, 02:30 GMT. The police reported the death, but since there are no more updates on how the operation ended 
Initially, the 32-year-old gunman tried escaping through the back of the building.

Security forces tried to persuade the gunman with his mother, which they brought to the shopping center. The mother tried but wasn’t successful in convincing him to give up himself.

Report from a person freed from the gunman, she and several other people hid in a bathroom on the fourth floor.

They later fled to the second floor and hid under a restaurant table for 3 hours. She said she heard four gunshots before seeing some soldiers who got her to safety.
