Thailand win Asian Games’ first esports medal

Thailand secured the inaugural esports medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on September 26. They won a bronze in a playoff against Vietnam in a mobile phone game, marking a significant moment for the video game industry’s aspirations to be included in the Olympic program. Esports was previously a demonstration tournament at the Jakarta Asian Games but has now become a medal event in Hangzhou. The tournament features various titles, including online soccer and multi-player battle arena games, with a total of seven gold medals up for grabs. Despite local regulations limiting children’s gaming time, the event has attracted enthusiastic crowds at Hangzhou’s Esports Centre since Sunday. In the bronze medal match for ‘Arena of Valor,’ Thailand’s team emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over Vietnam. Arena of Valor, developed by a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Tencent, is a highly popular multi-player battle arena game in Asia. The intense match was accompanied by loud music and live commentary, with players communicating with their teammates via headsets. Sorawat Boonphrom, one of the Thai gamers, expressed excitement and joy after the victory. Boonphrom, a Bangkok native, has been a professional gamer for ten years, starting his gaming journey at the age of five. Malaysia and China will compete for the first gold medal in esports later in the day, also in the game Arena of Valor.
