This is it: Game 7 Preview

Regardless of who wins tonight, this is it there will be no more tipoffs this NBA season after 8:00 pm tonight. The next big thing after tonight will be the NBA Draft but for now, instead of focusing on the future, its time for the here and the now.

Golden State is coming off a disappointing pair of losses with the latest one being the most stinging as not only did they successfully blow a 3-1 series lead with it but their two-time MVP Stephen Curry was ejected after accruing six personal fouls. The Warriors will need him to avoid repeating that, maybe getting more swallowed whistles by officials while they are at home, but they also need to shoot much better as they only shot 40.2% from the field in Game 6 and just 36.4 % in Game 5. In addition to these low team numbers, they have had individuals struggle mightily whether it be Draymond Green, who looked rusty after being suspended for a phantom flagrant foul, or Harrison Barnes who has shot just 2 for his last 22 attempts. These struggles have not just been limited to offense though as without top big man Andrew Bogut to guard in the paint due to injury the Cavaliers have shot over 50% in each of their previous two victories. On the bright side for the Warriors, if they can get a big night from Green and either Festus Ezeli or Anderson Varajao they might be able to mask missing Bogut defensively.

For the Cavaliers it’s pretty simple, drive the ball into the paint and good things will happen unless that disintegrates into the LeBron and Kyrie Iso-Ball show in which case the Warriors defense, coming off two bad performances has a chance to make this interesting. However if the two Cleveland stars can integrate JR Smith, Tristan Thompson, and Richard Jefferson into the scoring game the Cavs might just break the Curse of Cleveland. Defensively, they need to stay the course as Golden State’s horrific shooting has been too consistent to consider the shots they are missing “bad luck”.  (Note: Kevin Love has been nonexistent this series because Cleveland likes using his as a Stretch-Four, that is a three-point shooting power forward instead of letting him work in the paint where he is most efficient. Love has not played especially inspiring either so I will ignore his existence much like his teammates have offensively).

For Cleveland’s sake, I hope this game doesn’t end up like either of the first two, where they were unceremoniously blown out because as great as these two teams are there have been five blowouts in this series and that’s incredibly boring to watch on a nightly basis. History will be made tonight, either Golden State will join the Mount Rushmore of great NBA Teams after a 73-9 Regular Season, or Cleveland will become the first team since the 2006 Miami Heat to overcome a 0-2 deficit in the Finals and the first team to come back from down 1-3 in the Finals and the first Cleveland team to win a championship in 52 years. All eyes are on this game, let’s hope it’s truly worth watching.
