Thousands cross Sydney Harbour Bridge ahead of Women’s World Cup

On Sunday, thousands of soccer enthusiasts traversed the Sydney Harbour Bridge to commence a 25-day countdown to the Women’s World Cup, which Australia is co-hosting. The quadrennial tournament will take place in July and August across nine cities in Australia and New Zealand. FIFA stated that over 4,000 individuals participated in “a festival of football” before the tournament, which will feature teams from 32 countries. The event on the bridge, which was closed to traffic, involved the introduction of a 17-meter-tall “Unity Jersey,” according to FIFA. Public broadcaster ABC reported that participants walked, jogged, and danced along the iconic structure’s roadway. One attendee told Channel 7 television, “This is an incredible opportunity to begin the soccer World Cup, and women, well, we deserve the world, so we are here.” Another participant told the network, “Woman’s sport is becoming much more visible, and it’s wonderful to see us finally get a chance to show what we can do on the world stage; it’s amazing.” The first match will take place on July 20 at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, between New Zealand and Norway. Last month, Football Australia stated that the tournament could be the starting point for a future Australian bid to co-host the men’s event, potentially in 2034.
