Fake funerals have been held at the Hyowon Healing Center since the day it opened in 2012. The mass “living funeral” is conducted as part of a “dying well” program offered at the center. The healing center is located in South Korea and offers its services only to the living. Over 25,000 individuals have taken part in the fake funeral since it began.

Fake Funerals and their Benefits

Many persons who take part in the fake funeral do so with the hopes of improving their lives. South Korean citizens who take part in the ritual believe that it improves lives by stimulating their deaths.

Participators and facilitators of the program also believe that once you take part in the “dying well” program, you acquire a different approach to life. Facilitators state that a new approach to life is obtained because living funerals allow individuals to experience death and become conscious of it.

Furthermore, the ritual could be useful in preparing individuals for death even at an early stage. Moreover, the experience provides people with the opportunity to think about which way is the best way to leave.

The Hyowon Healing Center

The head of the Hyowon Healing Center said he started the fake funeral services to help people appreciate their lives. Additionally, he stated that living funerals help individuals seek forgiveness and reconciliation with friends and family.

Mr. Joeng Yong-mun, the head of Hyowon, states that the fake funerals make people realize that they don’t have forever. Hence the experience usually prompts most participants to apologize for mistakes and reconcile sooner to live happy lives.

Jeong said, “I am always happy to see people reconcile at a sibling’s funeral, but it still saddens me that they had to wait a long time.

Living Funeral Activities

A lot of people come from different regions of South Korea to participate in the living funerals. Retirees and even teenagers take part in the ritual. Some individuals come dressed in shrouds for their funeral. Other individuals take funeral portraits and compose their last testaments in front of their funeral portraits. Participants of the fake funerals lay in closed coffins for around 10 minutes each.

Suicide Rates in South Korea

Out of 40 countries analyzed in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development`s Better Life Index, South Korea secured number 33. Most South Korean citizens have high hopes of acquiring employment and education. These expectations, however, get shattered due to increasing joblessness and a cooling economy.

These undesirable outcomes have led to some individuals in South Korea doing some horrendous things to themselves. In the year 2016, a survey revealed that South Korea`s suicide rates stood at 20.2 per 100,000 residents. This figure was almost double that of the global average of 10.53 provided by the World Health Organization.

Fake Funerals Helping to Lower Suicide Rates

The Head of the Hyowon Funeral company revealed that some individuals that consider committing suicide do come into his facility. Mr. Joeng stated that he usually picks out some of these individuals out of the group visiting. Later on,  Mr. Joeng and his team try to reverse these people’s decisions at the healing center. Men and women, after that, realize that they do matter, and some people love them and would be devastated if they lost them.
