Three Ukrainian pilots have died in a mid-air collision between two L-39 trainer aircraft in central Ukraine, according to a statement from the country’s air force. The crash occurred on Friday in the Zhytomyr region, west of Kyiv. One of the pilots killed, known as “Juice,” had gained recognition through interviews with international media. The air force expressed condolences to the victims’ families and stated that an investigation into the crash was underway.
The loss of three pilots is a significant setback for Ukraine, as it prepares to train its air crews on Western-donated F-16 fighter jets. Kyiv has received pledges for up to 61 F-16s, and the incident will undoubtedly impact the training efforts.
The air force’s statement on the Telegram app conveyed the deep sorrow and irreparable loss felt by all. It emphasized the condolences extended to the families of the victims. Simultaneously, an investigation is being conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
