“Tonight Show” taping cancelled due to death of Fallon’s mother

Unfortunately, for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” the show will not go on this week as Jimmy Fallon grives with the loss of his mother. Repeats will air instead, according to a statement from NBC.

“On behalf of everyone at NBC, we extend our deepest condolences to Jimmy and all his family at this time of enormous loss,” said NBC in a statement. “Our hearts go out to Jimmy and everyone else whose lives were so touched by Gloria Fallon’s love, kindness and support.”

Friday, NBC cancelled a taping of “The Tonight Show” due to Gloria’s illness. Gloria died one day later in a hospital in New York.

“Jimmy Fallon’s mother, Gloria, died peacefully on Saturday,” a Fallon family spokesperson said in a press statement. “Jimmy was at his mother’s bedside, along with her loved ones, when she passed away at NYU Langone Medical Center in NYC. Our prayers go out to Jimmy and his family as they go through this tough time.”

Fallon is one to keep his personal life private. Over the years, Fallon has talked highly of his mother. During one “#MomQuotes” segment, he shared a funny anecdote on Twitter.

“My mom and I were talking on the phone for the third time that day and she actually said, ‘We don’t talk enough,’” he tweeted.

In a 2004 New York magazine article, Fallon described his childhood with his mother Gloria, his father Jim and his sister Gloria.

“My dad was in Vietnam, and he was in a doo-wop group,” Fallon said. “My mom was like a total square; she wasn’t allowed to leave her stoop in Brooklyn. She was a nun for about a month, but then she was like, ‘You know what? I didn’t get the calling!’ Ha!”

There has also been lots of love and support for the host from colleagues in late night and friends of the show.

Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tweeted on Sunday, “Mom is the first audience and the best. Remembering Jimmy Fallon and his family in our prayers today.” Colbert lost his own mother in 2013.

Miley Cyrus, who performed every night for a week last month, also tweeted out her support.

“I’m sad to say my friend Jimmy’s mother has passed away… sending him all the love in my heart,” the pop star tweeted Sunday. “Keep smilin Jimmy.” She added in a second tweet, “l know it’s tough to do when we lose someone we care about , I couldn’t imagine not having my mama…. I am so sorry ….”

Losing a family member is a tragedy for anyone to endure. Being in the limelight while dealing with a situation like this is an added factor that must be tough.

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” is set to return the week of November 13.
