Toronto set to elect Olivia Chow as its first Chinese-Canadian mayor-CBC News projects

Olivia Chow is projected to become the first Chinese-Canadian mayor of Toronto, Canada’s largest city. She has promised to support renters, advocate for social causes, and reduce the powers of her office. Chow drew on her experience as a former member of parliament and Toronto city councillor, as well as the relationships established by her late husband, former NDP leader Jack Layton.

Chow, who is 66 years old, will be the first woman to serve as mayor since Barbara Hall in 1997. She previously ran for mayor in 2014, finishing third. Born in Hong Kong, Chow immigrated to Canada at the age of 13 and graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in fine art.

Chow takes over as mayor following the resignation of John Tory, who won his third election in October 2022. Tory resigned in February after admitting to an affair with a staff member. Chow will lead Toronto during a time of rising housing costs and an increase in violent attacks on public transit, which has led to calls for more police action.

Throughout the campaign, Chow held a significant lead over her rivals in opinion polls. Tory endorsed his former deputy Ana Bailao, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford endorsed former Toronto Chief of Police Mark Saunders.
