Troops guard Pakistani Christians after mob torches churches

Paramilitary troops have cordoned off a Christian settlement in eastern Pakistan after a Muslim mob vandalized and torched several churches and houses. The incident occurred in Jaranwala, Faisalabad, and lasted for more than 10 hours without police intervention. The rioters demanded that two accused men, who had fled their homes, be handed over to them. Thousands of Muslims, led by local clerics, participated in the rioting armed with weapons. Paramilitary troops were deployed to control the situation and have blocked all entry and exit points of the Christian colony with barbed wire. Hundreds of Christians sought refuge in a nearby district, while four pastors returned to the still smoldering churches. Approximately 50 houses were completely destroyed, and small valuables were looted by the attackers. Amnesty International called on Pakistani authorities to protect minorities and condemned the vigilante violence that often follows blasphemy accusations. Over 100 suspected rioters have been arrested, and an inquiry into the incident has been ordered. Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan, and accusations are sometimes used to settle personal scores. The United States expressed deep concern over the targeting of churches and homes.
