Trump Lawyers Portray Impeachment Trial as Democratic Score-Settling

Trump is facing trial over charges of inciting deadly insurrection that his followers forced their way into the US Capitol to stop the Congressional leaders from certifying Biden’s victory in November’s presidential election.

The lawyers of the former president Donald Trump said the Democrats did not provide evidence to determine that he incited the crowd on January 6. They further accused the Democratic lawmakers of using the impeachment trial as a political tool.

Trump is facing trial over charges of inciting deadly insurrection that his followers forced their way into the US Capitol to stop the Congressional leaders from certifying Biden’s victory in November’s presidential election. The unprecedented chaos in Washington resulted in as many as five fatalities, including a Capitol police officer.

The former president’s legal team argued that Trump’s remarks hours before the chaos unfolded were protected under the first amendment of the US constitution. One of Trump’s lawyers, Michael van der Veen, said, “To claim that the president in any way wished, desired or encouraged lawless or violent behavior is a preposterous and monstrous lie.”

Meanwhile, the Senate has wrapped up its session, and a vote to convict Trump could be held as soon as Saturday. Earlier this week, the democratic impeachment managers presented videos and tweets to prove that Trump had set the stage for the riots by repeating his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud.

They accused the former leader of the White House gave his supporters of the marching orders and did nothing to stop the riots. But experts suggest that a conviction is unlikely, given that Democrats would need as many as seventeen Republicans to vote against Trump. In response, the Republican legal team also played a ten-minute video showing Democrats using the word “fight” in their speeches.

Days ago, the upper chamber of the US Congress voted on party lines to confirm whether the trial was unconstitutional or not. Despite this, as many as six Republicans broke party ranks and voted against Trump. If the Congressional leaders found Trump guilty, they could ban him from holding public office ever again. Besides, no side has so far shown an intention of calling any witnesses.

Trump is the first President in American history to be impeached twice, his first impeach trial over charges that he pressured Ukraine to open an inquiry into Joe Biden and his son ended in acquittal from the US Senate.
