Trump’s Lawyer Advises Against Releasing Tax Returns

This election season has been full of unpredictable moments, and a major odd variable has been the Republican candidate Donald Trump’s unusual campaign. He has attacked almost everyone possible yet still has people supporting him. He has accused President Obama of founding ISIS. Trump also apparently condoned the assassination of opponent, Hillary Clinton. However, he does claim that it was a joke, an obviously not funny one, though.

The most recent issue is that Trump has been consistently refusing to release his tax returns to the public. This is something that is customary for American Presidential candidates. All Presidential candidates have done this since the 1970s without exception. This allows for them to show a peek of how they earn their money to the public.

On Thursday, June 11, Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine declared they would unveil their latest returns. Trump has stated that he will not do it because he is under, as what he described, a “routine” IRS tax audit. Trump’s tax returns dating back to 2009 are only reportedly under audit; nevertheless, he will not show journalists any of the documentation.

Trump’s lawyers have also advised him against releasing them. Trump’s special counsel, Wolf Blitzer, responded to this and stated that advising Trump to obey this tradition during an audit would be “malpractice.”

Michael Cohen stated on air, “I personally will not allow him to release those tax returns until the audits are over.” He added that “There is not a lawyer on this planet that should give that advice — any advice other than what I just gave — to their client short of suffering malpractice.”

These claims seem to make no sense because top IRS official, Commissioner John Koskinen, publicly stated that it would be no problem if Trump released the returns during audit.

Trump, who claims to be a billionaire, is the head of a lucrative real estate business. The fact that he will not be revealing his tax return has sparked a lot of questions and allegations. Like the fact that he could have deceptive motivations, such as supposedly attempting to hide his investments in Russia, which is something he has strongly denied.

However, many other things suggest that he has connections with the nation. Therefore if they are really true it would be an evident conflict of interest, especially for someone running for President. Besides other claims, it could be possible that he just may not have paid income tax at rates that he claimed.

The sharing of tax returns by candidates might be an unquestioned tradition however Trump is not about to change his campaign strategy, which is all about being unusual. He has learned along the way that he can do all of what he is doing with little political consequence. He has chosen to be what he perceives to be the lesser of the two evils. I think the American people also must make that choice, since there not supposedly no other options.
