Several hours after Syria took down Turkey’s drone, Turkey’s military forces shot down two Syrian fighter jets over north Idlib.

Turkey’s defense ministry confirmed that they hit the aircraft just above northern Idlib province. However, there were no fatalities as both pilots escaped in parachutes.

The attack against Syria’s fighter jets came after Turkey announced a full-scale military operation dubbed “Spring Shield” against Syrian targets.

An airbase strike system hit the Syrian military’s Al-Nayrab airport. This was retaliation for attacks against the Turkish armed forces and civilians in Idlib.

The Syrian government closes down airspace over Idlib. One official told SANA that there would be a hostile flight treatment for any aircraft that violates their airspace. They will shoot down such a flight and prevent it from achieving its objectives

Military forces loyal to al-Assad have renewed their forces to attack and capture Idlib. Idlib is protected by the opposition that has the support of Turkey.

Since the operation intensified in December, the Syria government makes advancements to take control over parts of Aleppo province. Retaking the M5 highway will solidify the government’s hold in Idlib.

The operation violates the de-escalation deal that was set-up between Turkey and Russia in 2017 and 2018.

Syrian air raid killed thirty-four Turkish troops in Idlib. This toll is the biggest military loss that the Turkish government has experienced since its intervention in Syria’s conflict. In response, Turkey killed two thousand, two hundred and twelve Syrian troops.

Turkey’s Defense Minister claims that the country has also destroyed 103 Syrian tanks, 72 artillery, and eight helicopters. Turkey’s ministry of defense has also taken down a rocket launcher and three air defense systems.

The Tragedy of Idlib

The troubles and challenges in the area have displaced over one million people, a huge majority of whom are women and children. The record shows that about three hundred civilians have lost their lives as a result of the crisis. Moreover, Syrian civil defense rescuers claim that four, including a child, died during an airstrike on Sunday by government forces.

Besides, at a pro-Turkish demonstration in Idlib, Hussein al-Hamad said, Ankara intervened in the area “based on the request of the free Syrian people.”

Furthermore, they are in total support of the operation of the Turkish forces’ in Idlib.

Furthermore, al-Hamad concluded the statement by telling Al Jazeera that God willing, they will free all the towns in the province.

“Turkey’s strong intervention confirms the continuation of battles to wrest control of the fallen areas from the Syrian regime forces and its Russian allies and Iranian militias.”
