Turkey to end coach Kuntz’s contract after he criticised players -DHA report

Turkey’s soccer federation has decided to terminate coach Stefan Kuntz’s contract due to his criticism of the players after the national team’s loss to Japan. This decision was reported by the Demiroren News Agency (DHA) on Sunday. Kuntz responded to calls for his resignation by stating that the players needed to work harder and that he should not shoulder all the blame for the 4-2 defeat. He expressed disappointment that the players were not performing at their best and emphasized the need for them to respond to criticism on the field rather than in post-match interviews. These comments from Kuntz have strained relations with Turkey’s Football Federation (TFF), leading to the decision to part ways. The termination of Kuntz’s contract, which was set to end after the Euro 2024 tournament, has been announced by DHA. The TFF is expected to make an official statement on Tuesday. Kuntz, a former Germany striker and coach of the German Under-21 team, was appointed in September 2021 and has had a mixed record with 12 wins, 3 draws, and 5 losses in his 20 matches in charge. It is reported that Kenan Kocak, Kuntz’s assistant, may manage the team for their Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia on October 12. The TFF is considering bringing back former coach Abdullah Avci or signing former Germany manager Joachim Loew.
