Outside of Kunduz, two Afghan soldiers reportedly shot and killed 12 of their colleagues before defecting to the Taliban. The Defense Ministry stated it is one of the country’s’ deadlier attacks inside of this year.

The two Afghan soldiers fled the scene to join the insurgent group, according to a provincial police commander. The Taliban has notably been fighting for quite some time to unseat the Afghan government since their loss of power some 15 years ago.

Naturally, the Taliban has taken responsibility for the attack, which is currently under investigation.

Kunduz, a northern city, had fallen briefly to the Taliban last year and was the first to come under militant control since 2001.

Security, as a whole, has deteriorated across Afghanistan since the majority of foreign troops pulled out in 2014.

Tuesday’s attack by the two Afghan soldiers came as elite Afghan special operation units arrived in Uruzgan to reinforce troops who have struggled for weeks to prevent the capital, Tarin Kot, from falling to Taliban insurgency.

“Heavy fighting is ongoing right now in Tarin Kot,” provincial council chief Abdul Karim Khadimzai said. “The Taliban haven’t been pushed back, and the city is still under attack.” The Taliban had called in backup fighters from neighboring provinces, he added.

The U.S. military has stepped in to help support Afghan forces in recent weeks in Uruzgan with airstrikes. killed eight policemen at a checkpoint last week. However, an errant strike killed eight policemen at a checkpoint last week.

Both incidents are currently under investigation.
