Two New Consoles from Microsoft on the Horizon

This year is a great year to be a gamer. With the E3 2016 press conferences wrapped up and the internet fighting over whether Microsoft or Sony was the E3 “winner”, we can finally dive in depth on some of the biggest news that emerged from the presentations. One of the biggest pieces of news is that Microsoft has decided to launch two new Xbox Ones mid generation.

The first new Xbox is being referred to as the Xbox One S, with the S standing for slim in this case. Phil Spencer states that the console is 40-percent smaller than the current Xbox. Something that is sure to please a lot of gamers due to the current console being so large (nearly twice the size of a PS4). The Slim will also save space in your entertainment center by coming with an internal power supply, meaning you can ditch that big clunky box on your Xbox’s power chord. Additionally, it will come in a sleek gloss white finish to further distinguish its self.

Aside from the physical changes, it will also ship with the latest generation Xbox controller that contains a few new features. The Xbox One S will also come with a few internal tweaks and enhancements. The most notable ones being the ability to play movies and videos in 4k resolution as well as having high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities. If you’re wondering, HDR increases image quality by producing a greater range in lighting and shadows, meaning you’ll see more gradual and realistic shading in games. Quite the improvements for a console that will cost the same as the current one (starting at $299 USD).

The console also sports a few other miscellanies features such as an infrared (IR) blaster/sensor, which will hopefully allow people to ditch the dysfunctional Smartglass app in place of a universal remote or utilize the IR blaster on their smartphones, for those of you with Samsungs.

However, this doesn’t compare to Microsoft’s project Scorpio that is set to arrive holiday 2017. The ultra-powerful console supposedly is anywhere between 3-4 times more powerful than the current console. With an upgraded processor that has 6 teraflops of computing power and a stronger eight-core GPU, project Scorpio will be in direct competition with entry-level gaming PCs.

Phil Spencer claims the new console will be able to run games at 4K resolutions and be able to play current games at vastly superior frame rates compared to the current generation Xbox One. Specific details on exactly what hardware is inside of the console have yet to be revealed, nor has pricing been confirmed. Fans are already expecting project Scorpio to cost anywhere between $600-$1,000, suspecting that the Slim will be replacing standard consoles and project Scorpio will be a premium product for enthusiasts.
