Two Swedes shot dead in Brussels, Belgium raises terror alert to top level

Two Swedish nationals were shot dead in Brussels during a football match between Belgium and Sweden, leading Belgium to raise its terror alert to the highest level. A man claiming to be the assailant and affiliated with Islamic State appeared in a video on social media. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo confirmed the nationality of the victims but not their number. The alleged assailant, who identified himself as Abdesalem Al Guilani and a fighter for Allah, claimed there were three victims instead of two. De Croo expressed his condolences to the Swedish Prime Minister and emphasized the joint fight against terrorism. It is believed that the victims were soccer supporters, and the match was suspended at halftime due to security concerns. The shooting occurred amidst heightened security concerns in Europe due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Belgian authorities confirmed two deaths but provided no further details. The Brussels prosecutors also declined to disclose any information about the victims or the motive. Video footage showed the shooter firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene. A witness reported that the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire. In a video message, the self-declared perpetrator claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that he had killed three Swedes. France tightened controls at the border with Belgium following the incident. Belgium’s crisis center advised the public to avoid unnecessary trips in the capital.
