U.S. says it thwarted drone attack on troops in Iraq

The U.S. military successfully prevented an attack on its forces in Iraq by intercepting two drones before they could strike. This marks the first attack on U.S. forces in Iraq in over a year. The officials, who spoke anonymously to RushHourDaily, did not disclose the suspected party behind the attack. However, tensions are high in the region due to the Israel-Hamas war, and Washington is on alert for activity by Iran-backed groups. Last week, Iraqi armed groups aligned with Iran threatened to target U.S. interests if the U.S. intervened in support of Israel’s conflict with Hamas. The Pentagon has sent air defenses and munitions to Israel, but U.S. forces have not engaged in the fighting. The intercepted attack drones were headed towards Iraq’s al Asad air base, which houses American troops. The attack occurred shortly after an explosion at a Gaza hospital that killed hundreds of Palestinians. Israel attributed the blast to a failed rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, while Palestinian officials accused Israel of conducting an airstrike on the hospital. The tension over the war in Gaza has already been high in Iraq, with top Shi’ite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani condemning Israel’s actions. Iraqi armed groups blamed Israel for the hospital attack and criticized the U.S. for supporting Israel. Kataib Hezbollah, an armed faction with ties to Iran, accused the U.S. of supporting Israel in “killing innocent people” and called for the U.S. to leave Iraq. Iraqi politician Hadi Al-Amiri, leader of the Badr Organisation, also blamed Israel for the hospital attack and condemned the U.S. and Western countries for supporting Israel. He threatened to consider America and the West as partners in the “hideous massacre.” The United States currently has 2,500 troops in Iraq and an additional 900 in Syria to assist local forces in combating the Islamic State. In the past, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq frequently targeted U.S. forces and the U.S. embassy in Baghdad with rockets, but such attacks have decreased under a truce established last year. Kataib Hezbollah has been accused by U.S. officials of previous attacks on U.S. interests, although the group denies these claims. Members of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), an organization that includes many Iran-backed factions, protested the hospital attack and expressed their opposition to the U.S. and Israel. Some protesters attempted to cross the bridge leading to the fortified Green Zone, where the U.S. embassy is located, but were stopped by security forces.
