The British police reported on Wednesday the arrest of a man suspected of attempted murder in connection with the arson of a man on his way home from a mosque in central England last month.

The 82-year-old victim was speaking with a man as they departed the West London Islamic Centre when the man doused him with a substance, subsequently identified as gasoline, and set him ablaze. Face and arms of the injured individual were scorched, according to the police report.

On Monday evening, while walking home from a mosque in the Edgbaston suburb of Birmingham, the second victim, a 70-year-old man, was drenched with an unidentified substance and then his jacket was set on fire. His injuries are so severe that he remains hospitalized.

West Midlands Police said in a statement, “At this time, we are unable to speculate on the motive behind the attacks, as this is an ongoing investigation, and our first priority is to ensure the safety of our communities and to provide justice to the victims.”

On Tuesday, West Midlands Police said that counter-terrorism officers were aiding in their investigation.
