Ukraine reports fierce fighting in northeast

Heavy fighting was reported in the northeast of Ukraine on Sunday, with Kyiv’s forces holding their lines and making gains in some areas, according to a senior Ukrainian official. Russia’s military claimed to have halted Ukrainian forces in the northeast and said it had brought down three Ukrainian drones that attempted to strike Moscow. They also damaged a high-rise building that reportedly housed government offices. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the day as “a good day, a powerful day” at the front, particularly near Bakhmut, where Ukrainian forces were retaking lost ground from the Russian forces. Zelenskiy stated that the war was gradually returning to Russia’s territory, specifically its symbolic centers.

Russian forces launched a series of night-time air attacks, hitting a non-residential building in the northeastern city of Kharkiv. The attack caused a fire, but there were no reports of casualties. Zelenskiy reported that the death toll from a Russian strike on a school in the northern town of Sumy had risen to two after rescue teams cleared the rubble. Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar stated that Russian forces were attempting to drive them out of elevated positions in the northeast that were initially occupied by Moscow after the invasion in February 2022 but later retaken by Ukrainian troops. Maliar explained that the Russians’ main objective was to divert Ukrainian forces from the successful offensive in the Bakhmut area. She added that despite the continuous attacks, Ukrainian troops were resisting and sometimes pushing back the Russians with heavy losses. Maliar also noted that the Russians had suffered losses comparable to the heated battles in Bakhmut, which fell to Russian forces after over 10 months of fighting.

Last month, Ukraine launched a counter-offensive, focusing on a southward campaign to separate Russian-held territory in the east from the annexed Crimean peninsula and regain control of the Bakhmut area. However, intense fighting has also erupted around the Ukrainian-held towns of Kupiansk and Lyman in the northeast. Maliar stated that Russian forces were persistently trying to seize back areas on the southern front that were taken by Ukraine. While Ukraine had recaptured 200 sq. km. (77 sq. miles) in the south, advances were limited due to entrenched Russian positions and mines. Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that its forces had identified and deployed rockets to destroy a Ukrainian armored brigade near Svatove, a key Russian-held town in the northeast. They also claimed to have repelled four Ukrainian attacks near the town of Lyman. However, the accuracy of these battlefield accounts could not be independently verified.
