Ukraine says it is advancing near eastern city of Bakhmut

Ukraine announced on Friday that its troops had made significant progress in the fight against Russian forces near the city of Bakhmut, advancing over a kilometer in the past day. This update from Kyiv indicates that their counteroffensive, which began in early June, is gradually gaining ground. However, Russia’s accounts of the fighting in the Bakhmut sector differ from Ukraine’s.

According to Serhiy Cherevatyi, spokesperson for the eastern military command, the Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold the initiative in the area. They are exerting pressure on the enemy, conducting assault operations, and advancing along the northern and southern flanks. Cherevatyi stated that in the past day alone, they have advanced more than one kilometer.

General Oleksander Syrskyi, in charge of Ukraine’s land forces, also confirmed that Ukrainian troops are pushing forward towards Bakhmut. He mentioned that progress is being made and some territory has been regained, although he did not provide specific details.

The armed forces general staff spokesperson reported that Ukrainian forces had achieved “partial success” near the village of Klishchiivka, located southwest of Bakhmut. Military analysts in Ukraine believe that securing Klishchiivka would be crucial in retaking Bakhmut, which fell to Russian forces in May after months of fighting.

Contradicting Ukraine’s claims, Russia’s RIA news agency cited a Russian army source stating that Moscow’s forces had repelled an attack on Klishchiivka and were eliminating remaining Ukrainian troops in the area. The situation on the battlefield could not be independently verified by RushHourDaily.

Bakhmut is seen by Moscow as a strategic stepping stone for further attacks on other cities. Russia currently maintains control over Bakhmut, but Ukrainian forces aim to encircle the city. Since the start of their counteroffensive, Kyiv has reported the recapture of some villages in the south. However, large parts of eastern and southeastern Ukraine remain under Russian control.
