According to the Russian news agency RIA, a source close to the situation reported on Tuesday that Russia had begun using its new T-14 Armata battle tanks to fire on Ukrainian positions, but that they had not yet participated in direct assault operations.

According to RIA, the tank operators had undergone “combat coordination” on Ukrainian training grounds, and the tanks had been modified to give greater flank protection.

The T-14 tank has a remote-controlled turret, and the crew operates the armaments from “an isolated armored capsule located in front of the hull.”

According to RIA, one of these tanks has a peak speed of 80 km/h (50 mi/h) on the highway.

When the first tank supply landed in Ukraine in January, British military intelligence reported that Russian forces were reluctant to accept them due to their “poor condition.”

It further said that deploying the T-14 Armata would be “a high-risk decision” for Russia and that the action would be driven only by propaganda.

According to the British military, production will most likely be in the low tens, and commanders are unlikely to trust the vehicle in combat.

For the whole eleven-year development period, the program has been beset by setbacks, including decreased fleet size and accusations of manufacturing problems.

Following its first debut in 2015, the Kremlin allegedly asked that 2,300 of the tanks be manufactured by 2020, with the timeframe finally being pushed out to 2025.

Interfax reported in December 2021 that Rostec, a state-owned company, has commenced production on 40 tanks for delivery in 2023.
