Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday and requested non-lethal military assistance for her country, according to a statement released by the South Korean presidential office.

Zelenska, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s wife, is currently in South Korea for a press conference.

Yoon’s spokesperson, Lee Do-woon, told a press conference that Zelenska, as a special presidential envoy, told Yoon that she hoped to obtain support for Ukraine in the form of non-lethal military equipment such as mine detectors.

Yoon’s promise of “active help” for the people of Ukraine is cited by Lee.

In an interview with South Korean news agency Yonhap published on Tuesday, Zelenska suggested Yoon visit Ukraine, calling such a trip “very supportive.”

She advocated for “more radical” aid to Ukraine in response to Russian aggression.

South Korea, a major producer of artillery shells, has denied reports that it has supplied Ukraine with heavy weaponry as a result of diplomatic tensions with Russia.

However, Yoon stated in an interview last month that his government may not “insist solely on humanitarian or financial assistance” if civilians in Ukraine are targeted or there is a “situation the international community cannot condone.”
