Ukraine’s Zelenskiy orders moves to strengthen northern military sector

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has instructed top military commanders to strengthen Ukraine’s northern military sector in response to the presence of Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in Belarus. During a meeting with government and military leaders, Ukrainian intelligence and security forces provided a report on the situation in Belarus. Zelenskiy conveyed his decision to Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi and ‘North’ commander Serhiy Naev, urging them to implement measures to reinforce this direction. Although Zelenskiy did not mention Prigozhin in his message on Telegram, it is worth noting that Prigozhin recently arrived in Belarus after fleeing Russia under a negotiated deal with President Alexander Lukashenko. Reports suggest that Prigozhin’s Wagner Group may establish a new base near the town of Asipovichi, which is approximately 90 km from Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The meeting also addressed the situation in other frontline areas, the supply of artillery and shells, and the advances made by Ukrainian troops against Russia’s occupying forces. Following the expulsion of Russian forces from northern regions last year, Ukraine has taken measures to strengthen the defense of its border with Belarus, a close ally of Russia.
