Ukraine’s Zelenskiy says ‘serious threat’ remains at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed concern about the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, stating that there is a “serious threat” and that Russia is capable of causing a localized explosion at the facility. Zelenskiy attributed this information to Ukrainian intelligence. During a joint news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Kyiv, Zelenskiy emphasized the potential for a radiation release but did not provide further details. Ukrainian military intelligence had previously reported that Russian troops had mined the plant. Zelenskiy called for increased international attention to the situation and urged sanctions on Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom. Sanchez, visiting Ukraine as Spain begins its EU presidency, expressed support for Ukraine and announced a 55 million euro financial package to assist the country’s economy and small businesses. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, located in southern Ukraine, has been under Russian occupation since March of the previous year. Russia has denied allegations of planning an explosion at the plant, while both Kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of shelling the facility. Ukraine, formerly part of the Soviet Union, experienced the world’s worst nuclear accident in 1986 at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
