Ukrainian troops vow to take back Bakhmut but say it won’t be easy

Ukrainian soldiers are determined to retake the city of Bakhmut, despite facing strong resistance from Russian forces. Last week, they successfully recaptured two villages near Bakhmut, but the battle for the city itself will be a challenging and prolonged endeavor. Bakhmut is considered a significant prize for Moscow, as it is the only major territory they have gained in over a year of intense fighting. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stated that Kyiv will reclaim the city following the recent capture of Andriivka and Klishchiivka to the south.

Viktor, a 23-year-old machine gunner and sharpshooter in the Third Separate Assault Brigade, which has been leading the Ukrainian counter-offensive, is confident that Bakhmut will be recaptured. However, he acknowledges that it will not be an easy task, as Russia is expected to fiercely defend the city, as evidenced by the intense combat experienced in the surrounding villages. Viktor emphasizes that taking Bakhmut requires meticulous planning and hard work, and it will not be achieved quickly.

While the ruins of Bakhmut may not hold significant strategic value on their own, Kyiv considers the battle for the city pivotal due to the concentration of Russia’s best troops there. Moscow claims that holding Bakhmut is crucial for capturing the remaining territory in the eastern provinces that it has annexed.

Ukrainian soldiers who spoke to RushHourDaily described the arduous and deadly nature of the battle for Andriivka, located about 20 km from their current position. They faced constant enemy fire, drones, and explosions, resulting in casualties and injuries. The soldiers emphasize the high cost in lives for every meter gained during the assault. Despite the challenges, they managed to advance through the woods and ultimately forced the Russian defenders to surrender.

One soldier, Ilia, recounts the intense moments during the assault on Andriivka, where there was no time to be afraid. They took prisoners and secured the situation, but during a house search, a mortar round narrowly missed them and hit one of the prisoners, causing a concussion. Despite the dangers, the soldiers remained determined and focused on their mission.

The battle for Bakhmut continues, with Ukrainian troops prepared for the difficult task ahead. The soldiers understand the sacrifices and risks involved but remain committed to reclaiming the city.
